5 Kitchen Skills to Master Before You Turn 30
Our list doesn’t involve any fancy cooking techniques!
Turning 30 is a milestone for many: it often means items ticked off a bucket list and fewer life goals to work on.And while we think you don’t need to be a chef-in-training by the time you hit the big 3-0, there are certain kitchen and eating habits we think you must retire (think: eating instant noodles three times a week).
Are these still on your to-do list or have you mastered them all?
1. How to cook a hard-boiled egg perfectly.
You’ve been relying on a hit-or-miss method for years but this is one skill that you can easily master. We know boiling eggs isn’t as easy as it looks but you can make them just the way you like them: runny or medium-cooked for 7 minutes.
2. Having a signature go-to dish.
Whether it’s a pasta dish your mom taught you or perfecting your lola’s adobo recipe, wow everyone by being able to cook one dish perfectly every single time.
3. How to whip up a cocktail or a signature drink.
Sure, we love a bottle of ice cold beer but there’s something to be said about being able to mix a drink when you’re entertaining at home. Props to you if it happens to taste really good!
4. How to fry food perfectly.
Frying is one of the first cooking experiences almost everyone has gone through but it’s just plain sad if you always end up undercooking fried chicken or worse, burning fried eggs.
5. Knowing how to cook pasta properly and achieve al dente noodles every time.
Don’t settle for soggy pasta. Know these by heart: add salt when the water comes to a boil and don’t add oil when cooking pasta (it makes the sauce slide off the noodles).
