Rob McElhenney to Direct the Minecraft Movie!

Following the departure of previously-attached helmer Shawn Levy last December, Warner Bros. Pictures and Mojang have found a new director for their upcoming Minecraft movie! Mojang just announced on their official site that “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” creator, writer and star Rob McElhenney will direct!

“Some of you may have seen this guy hanging around MINECON in London a couple weeks ago,”writes Mojang COO Vu Bui. He’s Rob McElhenney, and he’s going to be directing the upcoming Minecraft movie.”
Minecraft, which, last year, passed 100 million registered users, is officially described as follows:
Minecraft is a game about breaking and placing blocks. At first, people built structures to protect against nocturnal monsters, but as the game grew players worked together to create wonderful, imaginative things.
It can also be about adventuring with friends or watching the sun rise over a blocky ocean. It’s pretty. Brave players battle terrible things in The Nether, which is more scary than pretty. You can also visit a land of mushrooms if it sounds more like your cup of tea.
Roy Lee and Jill Messick are attached to produce the Minecraft movie. The film doesn’t currently have a release date set, but check back for more information as it becomes available.
